Whānau Ora is a comprehensive approach to promoting the overall hauora or wellbeing of whānau, rooted in the essence of Māori values and community spirit. It recognises that the health and propserity of each individual are deeply interwoven with the health of the whānau as a whole.
At it’s core, Whānau Ora embraces the idea the whānau hold a unique strength and identity. By addressing the needs of ngā uri collectively and holistically, the approach ensures that physical, mental, cultural, and social dimensions are all taken into account. Focusing not only on individual health, but also on the strengthening of whakapapa (connections), the preservation of taonga tuku iho (heritage), and the enhancement of whanaungatanga (social relationships).
Whānau Ora encourages active participation from whānau members in shaping their own journey towards hauora. It empowers them to identify their aspirations, challenges, and strengths, and then supports them in creating meaningful goals. This process involves collaborating with a network of professionals and services, ensuring a coordinated effort towards achieving their goals.
By weaving together the threads of taonga tuku iho, personal empowerment, and community support, Whānau Ora creates a tapestry of resilience and prosperity. It recognises that the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts, and that by nurturing the hauora of whānau, we contribute to the thriving of individuals, families, and communities.
