Mātauranga Maori

Our Mātauranga Māori team Co-ordinate a range of initiatives and projects valuable to the revitalization of our Taonga Tuku Iho and our connection to our Whakapapa, Ngapumanawa e Waru.

Ngapumanawa e Waru 2025-2026 is offering a range of wananga and/or individual activities and public events that will improve the hauora of Māori whānau, hapū and iwi by supporting the revitalisation, expansion and practice of Mātauranga Māori within a Hauora Māori context. These Wananga are open to anyone over the age of 16 to attend, whether you are searching for your whakapapa links, interested in Taonga Puoro or already on a learning journey, all are welcome to attend.

We are currently offering the following initiatives:

  • Whakapapa Wānanga
  • Taonga Puoro Wānanga
  • Rangatahi Maara Kai Initiative
  • Mātauranga Māori promotion at Community Events

If you’re interested in any of our upcoming initiatives, please contact our Project Lead, Te Pae Fitzell tfitzell@pikiaorunanga.org.nz, or follow our FB page where we regularly post up Wananga details.

We look forward to seeing you at some of our future kaupapa!

Ko Te Pae Akurangi Fitzell toku ingoa.

My name is Te Pae and I have had the privilege of working for our Runanga since 2014, initially I starting as a Project Coordinator, I am now a Project Leader for both Kia Piki te Ora and Matauranga Māori. I am passionate about seeing our whānau thrive, reconnecting to who they are so that they may live to their full potential. My mahi allows me to bring our whānau into wānanga spaces, connecting to our Taiao, Rongoā Māori and Whakapapa, so that they can be proud of who they are, and know where they come from.

Mā te huruhuru ka rere te manu.

Anahera-Aroha Hawira

Mātauranga Maori Project Navigator

He uri tēnei nō Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Mākino, Tūhourangi-Ngāti Wāhiao, Ngāti Raukawa/Tūwharetoa anō hoki.
Ko Anahera-Aroha Hawira ahau. Mauri Ora ki a tātou katoa.

Raised in a big whānau on our marae on both sides of Lake Rotoiti, grounded in tikanga and guided by the wisdom of our whānau, kōeke, and tūpuna. This taught me aroha for our people, respect for our whenua, strength in whakapapa, and a deep connection to te taiao, values that still guide my mahi today.

In my previous role as a Fracture Liaison Paearahi, I cared for our kōeke and strengthened these values. I now carry them into the mātauranga Māori space, walking alongside our Rūnanga whānau through wānanga and kaupapa Māori.

It is a privilege to support both our iwi and our wider community, uplifting the mana and mauri of our people, and
creating pathways for whānau to heal, grow, and flourish.

“Maranga mai Pikiao, āwhinatia, te ope kua eke mai nei..”
